Black single mothers often do not receive the support and care they deserve because they are living in the in-between spaces of our current economic system.
Our Organizational Structure
Donations are given through our fiscal sponsor Motherful, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
This means that all donations to us are tax-deductible. By working through a fiscal sponsor, we save our energy and focus on our mission. This also mitigates risk, cuts costs, and puts the focus where we believe it should be: Black single mothers.
LBSM then distributes the funds directly inside a relational ecosystem that looks at the well-being of Black single mothers, not only in the financial realm but in all aspects of the mothering experience.
This whole-person, ancestrally grounded community care approach is in direct response to the ways that traditional charity inside philanthropy eats away at our dignity, reinforces class difference, and ignores the many ways that systems harm when relational interest and unconditional positive regard is decentered for the sake of organizational mission, goals or progress.
Our goal is to create ecosystems where funds flow naturally in tandem with relational support, seasoned guidance, and practical counsel from other Black women who understand the unique challenges and inherent gifts present for Black single mothers.
A Praxis of Possibility
It’s vital that our financial partners understand the difference between charity and solidarity.
